Ernest HUI

Ernest Hui read music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he studied composition with Professors Wendy Lee, Lo Hau Man and Victor Chan, and voice with Ms. Chan Siu-kwan. His compositions explore new possibilities in setting Cantonese to music, often with a distinguishing touch of jazz and improvisatory styles. His Cantonese choral work Forever Apart was selected as one of the top fifteen works in the Second IFCM International Competition for Choral Composition. Vox Populi, a commission by the Yat Po Singers, was presented in 2012 in “Work-in-Progress”, an a cappella composers’ workshop held by the Hong Kong Sinfonietta as part of their residency at ArtisTree. Hui is a CASH member and an artist represented by Apple Tree Music, which published his choral work Lorem Ipsum.

For his outstanding performance in composition, Hui was awarded the Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong (CASH) Scholarship 2014/15. His Cantonese art song Yi Jian Mei was recorded and published in the CUHK Music Department’s 50th Anniversary Celebration CD “Ad Excellentiam”. Hui is a CASH member, and is the Resident Composer of the Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups’ Hong Kong Melody Makers and Music Director of the Macao Cultural Centre Children’s Choir.
