Programme Notes

The Victoria is written for 5 octaves handbells and handchimes. The inspirations of the work are from the beautiful scenery across Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The piece used the bells’ ringing sound of Star Ferry Peer of the Victoria Harbour as composition materials; it hopes to awake audiences’ memories with the Star Ferry Peer.

The work is in ternary form. The motive used the ringing sound of Star Ferry Peer (Mi-Do-Ra-So and So-Ra-Mi-Do). The motive is divided and part of it is used in the introduction. The first section is characterized by fast tempo and percussive rhythm which give audience a joyful atmosphere.

The second section is in a slower tempo – Andante. The motive appears in different keys so as to show colorful scenery.

In the last section, the theme reappears, but it is more intense and compact. Strong percussive sound brings the music to the climax and an exerting ending.

This work was awarded Hong Kong Handbell Festival 2007 Handbell Composition Contest Gold Award.

《幻彩維港》是為五個八度的手鈴和四個八度的手鐘而作。創作意念來自維港兩岸閃爍、燦爛、耀眼的景觀。作品以天星碼頭的鐘聲為材料,以懷念天星碼頭與香港市民一起走過的日子。
作品以三段體曲式寫成,主動機用上天星碼頭的鐘聲(Mi-Do-Ra-So和So-Ra-Mi-Do)。引旨用上動機的一部份作開端,主題緊接著引旨出現。第一段用上澎湃的節奏,製造了喜氣洋洋,興高采烈的氣氛。

第二段,速度轉到行板,動機以不同的調子出現,形成色彩萬變的景象。
最後一段,主題再次出現,但比較第一次出現更緊湊,強勁的敲擊效果使氣氛更高漲。最後,樂曲在熱鬧及緊湊的氣氛下完結。

此作品曾獲香港手鈴節二零零七手鈴作曲比賽金獎
