Programme Notes

The Victoria is written for 5 octaves handbells and handchimes. The inspirations of the work are from the beautiful scenery across Kowloon and Hong Kong Island. The piece used the bells’ ringing sound of Star Ferry Peer of the Victoria Harbour as composition materials; it hopes to awake audiences’ memories with the Star Ferry Peer.

The work is in ternary form. The motive used the ringing sound of Star Ferry Peer (Mi-Do-Ra-So and So-Ra-Mi-Do). The motive is divided and part of it is used in the introduction. The first section is characterized by fast tempo and percussive rhythm which give audience a joyful atmosphere.

The second section is in a slower tempo – Andante. The motive appears in different keys so as to show colorful scenery.

In the last section, the theme reappears, but it is more intense and compact. Strong percussive sound brings the music to the climax and an exerting ending.

This work was awarded Hong Kong Handbell Festival 2007 Handbell Composition Contest Gold Award.
