Programme Notes

Oriental Garden for English Horn, Viola and Guitar was commissioned by l’art pour l’Aar in 2008 for its festival Klang-Klee commemorating the Swiss Expressionist painter Paul Klee (1879-1940). The music is the composer’s personal reflection upon a Klee painting of the same title. The painting using mainly pink and purple colour is a result of Klee’s visit to Turkey. The composer found this painting particularly warm and inspiring. The music was written for the Klang-Klee featured group Ensemble Sortisatio Leipzig and received its premiere in Winterthur and Bern, the birthplace of Klee.
